Nathan Pohio

Nathan Pohio (* 1970 in Christchurch ) is an Aotearoa / New Zealand conceptual artist , photographer , video and installation artist .

life and work

Nathan Pohio was born as a member of the Māori Iwis Waitaha , Kāti Māmoe and Ngāi Tahu . Pohio studied film at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury up to his master's degree . He was artist in residence in Australia in 2004, France in 2008 and New Mexico in 2012. He works as an exhibition designer and assistant curator at the Christchurch Art Gallery . In 2016, Pohio was nominated for the Walters Prize . In 2017 he was a participant in documenta 14 .

The photo installation Raise the anchor, unfurl the sails, set course to the center of an ever setting sun! , was shown at documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel. Pohio took two photographs from 1905 as the starting point for his work. The photos deal with the legal dispute (over land ownership) between the Māori and the British Empire .
