Nathanael (Nate) Leedom Ackerman (born March 4, 1978 in New York City ) is a British - American freestyle wrestler .

Ackerman was born to the writer Joanne Leedom-Ackerman and the businessman Peter Ackerman. In the first year of his life his family moved with him to Los Angeles . In 1990 he moved to London , where he graduated from the American School in London . It was there that Ackerman began to wrestle.

In 1995 he began studying mathematics at Harvard University and graduated magna cum laude in June 2000 . He then moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to get his PhD in mathematics.

Ackerman took on British citizenship in addition to US citizenship in 1998. In 1999 he started for the first time for Great Britain at the Freestyle World Championships in Ankara and was 16. He also took part in the World Championships in 2001, 2002, and 2003 and in the Commonwealth Games 2002 in Manchester . In 2002 and 2004 he was British champion in his weight class.

In 2004 Ackerman first took part in the Olympic Games in Athens . There he retired in the class up to 74 kilograms after two defeats against the Armenian Arajik Geworgjan and the later silver medalist Gennadi Lalijew from Kazakhstan after the pool phase and finished in 19th place.
