National Centers for Environmental Prediction
The National Centers for Environmental Prediction ( NCEP ; German National Centers for Environmental Forecast ) of the United States provide various weather forecasts. The centers are part of the National Weather Service (NWS) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
There are a total of nine individual centers:
- The Aviation Weather Center provides aviation warnings and forecasts of dangerous flight conditions for American and international airspace.
- The Climate Prediction Center observes short-term fluctuations in the climate and forecasts further developments and possible effects for the United States.
- The Environmental Modeling Center develops and improves methods for forecasting weather, climate, water cycles and other developments in the oceans.
- The Weather Prediction Center (until 2013: Hydrometeorological Prediction Center ) provides analyzes and forecasts for the next seven days.
- The NCEP Central Operations uses numerical methods and predictive models and prepares NCEP data for publication.
- The Ocean Prediction Center provides weather warnings and forecasts for up to five days for the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans north of the 30th parallel
- The Space Weather Prediction Center observes space weather and provides warnings of turbulence that could affect people and material in space or on earth.
- The Storm Prediction Center tracks tornadoes and other storms across the United States and provides predictions for their future development.
- The Tropical Prediction Center includes the National Hurricane Center and provides forecasts of the movement and severity of tropical weather conditions, including warnings based on them, for the United States and its vicinity
