The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is a government research institution in the network of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). The task of the NIEHS is to reduce illness and disability in people through research into environmental influences .

The NIEHS conducts basic research , clinical research and advanced training for researchers. NIEHS research includes the effects of asbestos , developmental delays in children exposed to lead , and health effects from air pollution . In 1994, Martin Rodbell was among the recipients of the Nobel Medicine Prize who worked in the NIEHS laboratories. In 1995, researchers there discovered a gene that suppresses prostate cancer .

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is located in Research Triangle Park (RTP) near Durham, North Carolina . Head is Dr. Linda Birnbaum, Ph.D., DABT, ATS; the deputy head is Richard Woychik.

The NIEHS consists of:

  • Division of Intramural Research (DIR), i.e. research within the NIEHS
  • Division of Extramural Research and Training funds research outside
  • Division of the National Toxicology Program, an inter-departmental program headquartered at NIEHS
