The National Portrait Gallery ( NPG ) is a portrait gallery in Washington, DC in the United States.

In 1968, the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum opened in the Patent Office Building in Washington.

The gallery documents the diversity of the personalities who shaped the USA and its culture. These people are introduced to the visitor in a wide variety of visual and performing arts. It is the only museum in the USA that combines history, biography and art.

The museum owns more than 19,400 works from the fields of painting, sculpture, photography and drawing.

One of the main focuses of the gallery's collection are the images of the presidents, which are exhibited in the Hall of Presidents , among other places .
