The National Bank of the Republic of Moldova (NBM) ( Romanian : Banca Naţională a Moldovei) is the central bank of the Republic of Moldova with its headquarters in Chișinău . The NBM is an independent legal entity under public law that is accountable to Parliament. The main objective of the bank is to achieve and maintain the stability of the national currency, the Moldovan leu . The National Bank works with the government to achieve its objectives and, in accordance with the law, takes the necessary measures to achieve them. The NBM regularly informs the public about its macroeconomic analyzes, the development of the financial markets and statistical data, including money supply , lending , balance of payments and foreign exchange reserves .
history
In accordance with the legislation, a two tier banking system was created in 1991. Within this system, the National Bank of the Republic of Moldova acts as the central bank but is not involved in commercial banking. In June and July 1995, Parliament passed two laws, one on the National Bank of Moldova and one on financial institutions.
