The National Democratic Union ( Armenian Ազգային ժողովրդավարական միություն Asgajin Zhoghowerdakan Mijutjun , abbreviated AZM) is a party in Armenia .

history

The party was founded after Armenia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and was officially registered on March 19, 1992. Under the chairmanship of Vassgen Manukjan , the party received seats in the National Assembly for the first time . Manukjan is one of the founders of the Karabakh Movement , was the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, then Minister of Defense and was one of the close allies of Levon Ter-Petrosyan during his tenure as President .

In the mid-1990s, the party advocated a solution to the Karabakh conflict by returning occupied territories to Azerbaijan in return for the recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh's independence . Manukjan was perceived as the most promising main rival of Ter-Petrosian in the 1996 presidential elections. As a result, the party was weakened by several splits, with personal ambitions of politicians also playing a role. In the 2000s, the party was still heavily influenced by its individual representatives, with only loose party structures and a weak party base.

The party is not represented in the current parliament and did not run for the early elections in 2018 .
