National Democratic Alliance (Sudan)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Democratic Alliance ( English National Democratic Alliance , abbreviated NDA ; Arabic التحالف الوطني الديمقراطي, DMG at-Taḥāluf al-waṭanī ad-dīmuqrāṭī ) is an alliance of opposition parties and organizations in Sudan .

development

The NDA was founded in 1989 after Omar al-Bashir took power through a military coup and established a military dictatorship . When the South Sudanese rebels of the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) allied with the NDA in 1995 , this significantly increased their influence. Since the government gave in to pressure in 1999 and reintroduced a multi-party system , the NDA has lost its importance. Many member organizations and parties boycotted the 2000 elections because, in their opinion, they were not free and democratic.

Following the peace agreement between the government and the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, which ended the war of civil war in South Sudan , the NDA also signed an agreement with the government on January 9, 2005. Some positions of the NDA, for example on the ongoing Darfur conflict , have not yet been determined, which is also due to the fact that the member organizations are connected by the common goal of eliminating the dictatorship, but also pursue very different goals.
