The National Maritime Aquarium of Namibia ( English The National Marine Aquarium of Namibia ) is the only public aquarium in the southwest African country of Namibia . It is located directly on the Atlantic Ocean in Swakopmund .
The aquarium was established by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources in the 1990s .
All pools are supplied with seawater from the Atlantic through a filter system. The largest basin contains 320,000 liters, is 12 meters long and eight meters wide. It is crossed by a tunnel, which is considered a special attraction, as sharks and rays can be seen here.
The aquarium was completely renovated from the beginning of 2010 to the end of 2012.
biodiversity
The aquarium is home to fish species and other marine animals typical of the Namibian waters of the cold Benguela Current , including galjoen ( Dichistius capensis ), steenbras ( Lithognathus lithognathus ) and sand sharks (Odontaspididae) as well as green turtles ( Chelonia mydas ).
