The National Museum of History of Ukraine in World War II ( Ukrainian Національний музей історії України у Другій світовій війні ) is a memorial to the German-Soviet War commemorates and southern outskirts of the district of Pechersk of Kiev , capital of Ukraine lies. The museum is located on a group of hills on the right bank of the Dnieper River .

The museum had changed its location twice before it was officially opened on May 9, 1981 by the Soviet head of state Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev . On June 21, 1996, the museum received its current status as a national museum by a decree of Leonid Kuchma , the President of Ukraine .

It is one of the largest museums in Ukraine (more than 300,000 visitors per year) with the Mother Homeland statue in the center and is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kiev. The museum has had more than 21 million visitors so far.

Building complex

The site covers an area of ​​ten hectares . There is also the giant ball "The Flame of Glory", a memorial that exhibits military equipment from the Second World War . There is also the "Avenue of the Hero Cities ". One of the museums shows, among other things, the war equipment of the Soviet Army after the Second World War. The sculptures along the avenue are intended to express the brave perseverance and the courageous defense on the Soviet border against the German invasion .
