The National Mining Museum ( French : Musée National des Mines de Fer Luxembourgeoises , abbreviated MNM) is a Luxembourg museum in Rümelingen , which focuses on iron ore mining from the mid-19th century to the 1980s.

history

The National Mining Museum was founded on May 4th 1973 by an initiative of the Mayor of Rumelange, André Zirves. The association that dealt with the construction of the museum facilities consisted mainly of former miners .

The museum was largely built in part of the former Walert iron ore mine , which once belonged to the Rodingen ironworks . The tunnel used , which is up to 90 m below the surface, is almost 580 m long. The temperature in the tunnel is constant at 10 ° C all year round.

In 1996/1997 the above and below ground facilities of the museum were renovated by the Luxembourg state and the European Union and in some cases considerably expanded. In 2002 the museum got two new train units, each consisting of a tractor and two passenger cars . These are used to transport guests into the tunnel. The two diesel-hydraulic locomotives were named after Princess Alexandra of Luxembourg and Prince Sébastien of Luxembourg .

In 2019, 2.5 million euros will be invested in the MNM site. On the one hand, the Walertmine is to be equipped with an installation for virtual and augmented reality, on the other hand the reception hall with its exhibition rooms is to be modernized.
