National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine
The National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine ( Ukrainian Національний симфонічний оркестр України ) is a Ukrainian symphony orchestra based in Kiev .
history
The orchestra was founded in 1918. In Soviet times the orchestra was known as the USSR State Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra plays under such famous conductors as Kurt Sanderling , Yevgeny Mrawinsky , Leopold Stokowski , Igor Markevitch , Kirill Kondraschin , and Yevgeny Svetlanov . World-famous soloists such as Arthur Rubinstein , Isaac Stern , Yehudi Menuhin , Montserrat Caballé , Josep Carreras , Dawid Oistrach , Svyatoslaw Richter , Mstislaw Rostropowitsch and Gidon Kremer work with the orchestra . Volodymyr Sirenko has been the orchestra's artistic director and chief conductor since 1999 . Home of the orchestra is the Lysenko Concert Hall of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine .
