Chiang Mai National Museum

The Chiang Mai National Museum is one of more than 40 national museums in Thailand .

The museum is located in the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Chiang Mai of the provincial capital Chiang Mai in the northern region of Thailand . It is located north of the old town on the so-called Chiang Mai-Lampang Superhighway ( National Road 11 ).

history

The museum building was erected in 1972 in the local Lan-Na style. On February 6, 1973, King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit officially opened the “Main Museum of the Northern Region”. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the throne of King Bhumibol and the 700th anniversary of the founding of Chiang Mai, the building was renovated and enlarged in 1996.

Collections

  • Ground floor: in addition to the entrance hall and a large auditorium, there are three rooms with the following collections:
    • 1.) The natural and cultural background of the Lan Na Kingdom, divided into geology, ecology, geography and prehistoric settlements.
    • 2.) The history of the Lan Na Kingdom - with a stone stele that was found in Wat Chiang Man and which can be dated to 1581. The foundation of Chiang Mai is described on this stele. There are also Buddhist offerings from the 15th to 18th centuries and Buddha statues of various sizes. Ceramics from the 14th century from both Sawankhalok and local kilns can be seen. Two historical kilns are on display in the garden in front of the building.
    • 3.) The story of the Kings of Chiang Mai and their relationship to the Siamese court - historical weapons, clothing and historical photos are worth seeing here. There is also a wooden throne from the 18th century, decorated with glass mosaics and gilding, a sedan and a howdah (seat which is mounted on the back of an elephant) with ivory - inlaid . The most beautiful exhibit is a wooden Buddha's footprint about two meters high , which is artistically decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays. It can be dated to the year 1726.
  • First floor - there are three more rooms with these collections:
    • 4.) Trade in Lan Na between 1782 and 1932 - numerous historical photos and plaques explain the construction of the Thai railway line to Chiang Mai. Further subdivisions deal with trade and the forest industry.
    • 5.) Agriculture and Industrial Development in Northern Thailand - many historical tools are on display, for example a spinning wheel, a loom and fishing nets and pots. You can also see means of payment from bygone times, such as Kauri money . Finally, the development of medicine and school education in the north is presented.
    • 6.) The history of Lan Nas art from the Dvaravati period to the present day - the exhibits here include terracotta figures from the 12th century, a 180 cm high head of a bronze Buddha statue from the 15th century, wooden candelabra and many other Buddha statues of various sizes made of wood, sandstone or bronze.
