Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai (in Thai : อำเภอ เมือง เชียงใหม่ ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) in the central part of Chiang Mai Province in the northern region of Thailand .

geography

Neighboring counties (clockwise from the north): the Amphoe Mae Rim , San Sai , San Kamphaeng , Saraphi and Hang Dong of Chiang Mai Province.

The largest river in the district is the Mae Nam Ping (Ping River) .

history

The Mueang Chiang Mai area was the center of the Lan Na kingdom .

The Thai government established the Mueang Chiang Mai District in 1899. The first district office was opened in 1929 on the west side of the old Chiang Mai City Hall. In August 1989 a new district office was opened.

In Mueang Chiang Mai, the main campus is Chiang Mai University and the Rajabhat University Chiang Mai .

  • Doi Suthep-Pui National Park
    • Wat Phra That Doi Suthep , one of the most important pilgrimage sites in northern Thailand and a symbol of Chiang Mai Province, on the slope of Mount Doi Suthep , about 17 km west of Chiang Mai city
    • Bhubing Palace ( RTGS : Phuphing ), "winter residence" and residence for stays by the royal family in northern Thailand. Opened to visitors in the absence of the royal family; Gardens of flowers that cannot grow due to the climate in other places in Thailand; also on Doi Suthep mountain, another 5 kilometers by road above Wat Phra That.
    • Hmong village on Doi Pui. Members of the people present their handicraft traditions here and pose in festive dress with tourists.

  • Chang Phueak (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ช้างเผือก ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Chang Phueak.
  • Nong Pa Khrang (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล หนอง ป่า ครั่ง ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Nong Pa Khrang.
  • Suthep (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล สุ เทพ ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Suthep.
  • Pa Daet (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ป่าแดด ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Pa Daet.
