Amphoe Phrao (in Thai : อำเภอ พร้าว ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) in the northeast of Chiang Mai Province . Chiang Mai Province is located in the northern region of Thailand .

Neighboring districts are (from the south clockwise) Amphoe Doi Saket , Mae Taeng , Chiang Dao , Chai Prakan of Chiang Mai Province, and Amphoe Mae Suai and Wiang Pa Pao of Chiang Rai province .

history

The name Phrao was given to the city by King Mangrai of the Lan Na Kingdom around 1281 when he was on his way to conquer the Hariphunchai Kingdom . After that, Mangrai sent his third son, Khrua, to rule over Phrao. Later, Phrao became an important city in the Lan-Na Kingdom.

About 100 years later, King Tilokarat , who was regarded as the god-king of Lan Na, is believed to have ruled Phrao before he was crowned king.

Pa Tum (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ป่า ตุ้ม ) consisting of the complete tambon Pa Tum.
Pa Nai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ป่า ไห น่ ) consisting of the complete tambon Pa Nai.
Ban Pong (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล บ้านโป่ง ) consisting of the complete Tambon Ban Pong.
Nam Phrae (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล น้ำ แพร่ ) consisting of the complete Tambon Nam Phrae.
Wiang Phrao (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล เวียง พร้าว ) consisting of the complete tambon Wiang, Thung Luang.
Mae Pang (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล แม่ ปั๋ง ) consisting of the complete tambon Mae Pang.
