Nationalnyckeln till Sveriges flora and fauna
Nationalnyckeln till Sveriges flora och fauna (Swedish for national key to Sweden's flora and fauna , or Nationalnyckeln for short ) is a botanical and zoological reference work that is currently being developed and commissioned by the Swedish Parliament. When it is completed, it should describe the entire Swedish flora and fauna in a generally understandable manner and enable botanical and zoological laypeople to identify every species of plant, fungus and animal that occurs in Sweden.
assignment
The publication of the Nationalnyckeln is based on a resolution of the Swedish Parliament of 2002 and aims to promote interest in the species and their living environment among the population and to increase general knowledge in this area. The Swedish state is providing the project with 25,000,000 Swedish kronor (equivalent to around 2.8 million euros) annually over a period of 20 years from tax funds . It is the only work of its kind in the world. With an estimated 100 volumes and 44,000 pages, the Nationalnyckeln is the largest Swedish book project of all time. The first volume appeared in 2005; in January 2011, 12 volumes were published.
All multicellular plant , animal and mushroom species native to Sweden - around 50,000 to 60,000 in total - are to be recorded, their occurrence mapped and their biology and way of life comprehensively presented in words and pictures. The latter is done in a way that is also understandable for non-biologists, so that despite the very high technical level and the reference work character, it is a popular scientific work. At the same time, the Nationalnyckeln forms a universal key to determine all of Sweden's living nature. Field identification keys are also created as an accompanying work, which, unlike the large-format volumes of the main plant, are suitable for use in the field. With advanced training courses and free accompanying teaching materials, teachers and schools are to be supported as multipliers .
The Nationalnyckeln appears independently of commercial publishers . The approximately 28-person editorial staff of the work is based at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences ( Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet, SLU ) in Uppsala . About 10 volumes are being worked on in parallel, of which about two are currently being completed each year. The completion of the entire work is therefore not foreseeable before 2030, even with the announced increasing frequency of publication of the volumes. The renouncement of a financial gain in the creation and marketing is expressly politically desired; the consequent relatively low price of high quality equipped volumes (250, - SEK per band in the subscription , equivalent to about 28 euros) is to serve the spread within the general population.
Creation
Swedish Species Project
The "Swedish Species Project" is used to create the work to record and map the species occurring in Sweden. Extensive field research is carried out within this framework. The inventory of the Swedish marine flora and fauna, for example, began in 2006 and was completed in 2009, in part with the University of Bergen, Norway. Before that, a nationwide inventory of insects had already been carried out between 2002 and 2006 in a large project under the direction of Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet . In addition to the scientific inventory, a publicly accessible and supplementable species database is used, in which amateurs can also report species observations (see web links).
Taxonomic research
In addition to the inventory and mapping, the taxonomic classification of the species is carried out, which is time-consuming, especially in the case of little-researched organisms and taxonomic groups. It finally leads to a list of species in which all species are classified that regularly occurred in Sweden after 1900. By 2008, around 750 new species had been discovered and described through the species project, and the occurrence of more than 1,200 species in Sweden was not yet known. Many taxonomic groups are recorded beyond Sweden for the whole of Scandinavia, which is later noted on the front pages of the corresponding volumes.
Swedish naming of all kinds
A naming committee formed as part of the Swedish Species Project has the task of creating Swedish names for all species that previously only had one scientific name. This is the case for the vast majority of species. The Swedish naming comes from the objective of making the topic easier to access and develop for people who do not belong to the specialist audience.
Creation of the identification key
Then the dichotomous identification keys are created, which are specially illustrated to enable non-biologists to identify the individual species.
Creation of text and images
The descriptive and in-depth texts on the species are written by experts in the respective fields for the Nationalnyckeln , then editorially proofread and, if necessary, revised to ensure their general understanding. Most of the illustrations are made for the work; In addition to conventional and microphotographs, there are also numerous watercolors and digitally created illustrations. B. functional-anatomical structures also computer-aided 3D modeling are used.
Criticism and problems
The reception within Sweden was mostly very positive; the project is so far little known outside of the country. Criticism is made of the very detailed morphological description of the species, which is superfluous due to the excellent illustrations of this length.
One problem is that there are only a few experts in Sweden for rare and little-known taxonomic groups, some of whom have already passed retirement age. For this reason, the preparation of volumes on some of these groups of species is brought forward.
expenditure
The Nationalnyckeln appears in two different versions: on the one hand in a linen cover with a dust jacket, on the other hand with a cover made of Swedish reindeer leather and with gilt edging (this edition has not been available in individual volumes since May 2011 and is only available in the context of long-term subscriptions that have already been issued ). The volumes are arranged according to the taxonomic system, but do not appear in that order. The classification of the volume in the overall work is carried out by means of a letter and number code on the spine of the book.
