Amacayacu National Park
The Amacayacu National Park is a national park in southern Colombia , 60 kilometers from Leticia . The national park borders directly on the Amazon and is also located in the Departamento de Amazonas . The name Amacayacu comes from the Quechua language and means "hammock river".
The national park was established in 1975 by the Colombian government with the aim of preserving the unique flora and fauna of the Amazon region. The size of the national park is 293,500 hectares. There is a visitor center that also offers accommodation to tourists.
According to estimates by the National Park Authority, around 150 different species of mammals, around 500 species of birds and a large variety of freshwater fish live in the area of the park. Here you can see the smallest species of primate (the lion tamarin) and the largest freshwater turtles . But there are also a number of other interesting animal and plant species to see in the park. A total of 468 species of birds and parrots can be found here. The park is also inhabited by the indigenous people of the Ticuna . Although the park is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, it is still an insider tip. One of the biggest highlights for tourists are the pink freshwater dolphins that can be seen here.
