The Parque Nacional Guaraira Repano / El Avila is a national park in Venezuela , in the Venezuelan coastal cordillera in the immediate vicinity of the capital Caracas. The name Guaraira Repano means large mountains in the language of the Indians.

The park was founded in 1958, the area was initially 66,192 hectares, in 1974 it was expanded by 19,000 hectares. Despite its proximity to the capital, the park remains largely untouched and, with the exception of a few small farms, is largely uninhabited. Coffee was once grown in some places.

geography

The park covers parts of the Ávila massif between the Caribbean and the Caracas valley and forms an approx. 80 km long, approx. 10-15 km wide strip. It is bounded by the Caracastal in the south, the cities of Catia la Mar in the northwest, Caracas in the southwest, in the north by the Caribbean, in the northeast by Chuspa.

The mountains reach heights of over 2000 meters, with the highest point being Pico Naiguatá at 2765 meters. The mountains consist of Cretaceous sediments and granite. The lowest point is at 120 meters on the Caribbean coast. In addition to the Pico Naiguata, important surveys are:

  • Pico Oriental 2640 m
  • Pico Occidental 2480 m
  • Pico El Avila 2250 m

The national park extends over several zones:

  • Relatively dry Caribbean coast (up to about 500 m), there are dry forests.
  • Tropical wet forests on the Caribbean side (500 m - 1000 m), with seasonal drought.
  • Mountain savannah (from 1000 m) that was created by human intervention
  • Always moist mountain rainforests and cloud forests (from 1000 m to 2200 m), each on both sides.
  • Subparamo , around the highest peaks, (from 2200 m).

fauna

Occurring big cats are ocelot , puma and jaguar . Other mammals include deer species, foxes, various monkeys and sloths. The park is also rich in bird species.
