The Llanganates National Park is a nature reserve in Ecuador .

The park is located in the province of Napo about 50 km southwest of the provincial capital Tena . The name "Llanganates" means "beautiful mountain" in the Quechua language and refers to the 4571 m high Cerro Hermoso (Spanish: "beautiful mountain"), the highest point in the park. The national park covers an area of ​​over 200,000 ha in several climatically different altitude zones between 602 and 4571 m above sea level. The biodiversity in the park is high.

The park is also known for the legend of the Atahualpa hidden Inca gold treasure .

ecology

Various ecological zones overlap in the park. The western area is high and can be assigned to the Páramo . Here there are lonely, deserted landscapes with high peaks and deep valleys and forms the habitat for vicuñas , llamas and alpacas . The eastern area lies on the eastern slopes of the Andes and borders the rainforests of the Amazon region . Species-rich mountain forests thrive here. This area is inaccessible due to its slopes and numerous mountain rivers.

The park's rare and protected animals include puma , jaguar , tapir , ocelot , various species of monkeys, capybara , spectacled bears , weasels , foxes, as well as the Andean condor , the toucan , various species of parrots, and the Andean cliff bird .
