The Loango National Park (French: Parc National de Loango ) is located on the Atlantic coast in southwest Gabon , around 300 km from the capital Libreville . The approximately 1550 km² park was founded in 2002 by the merger of the Iguela and Loango reserves. It is one of thirteen national parks in Gabon that are intended to restructure the economy: away from the slowly dwindling oil revenues towards ecotourism . Together they take up 10% of the total area of Gabon.
The park is known for seeing the large animals of Africa, including elephants, buffalo and hippos, on the white sandy beaches. Up to 10,000 forest elephants live in what is probably the most important national park in Gabon . Other common animals are gorillas , red buffalo , antelopes , pin-eared pigs , sea turtles , Atlantic tarpon , freshwater mackerel and hippos .
