The National Park Swjati Hory ( Ukrainian Святі Гори / Swjati Hory ; Russian Святые горы / Swjatyje gory ; German mutatis mutandis "Holy Mountain") is located in the northern part of the region of Donetsk in the Ukraine in Rajons Slavyansk (11,957 ha), Lyman (27,665 ha) and Bachmut . It was established on February 13, 1997 by DPR No. 135/97.

The park extends along the left bank of the Siversky Donets River with other areas on the right bank. The total area of ​​the park is 40,589 hectares, of which 11,878 hectares are owned by the park administration. In the park there are chalk cliffs with relict plant species such as the pre-glacial chalk pine ( Pinus sylvestris var. Cretacea ). In 2008, these chalk cliffs were included in the list of top 100 in the Ukrainian competition Seven Natural Wonders of Ukraine . There are roads and railway lines in the park, as well as a number of settlements.

flora

There are 943 species of plants in the park, 48 of which are on the Ukraine Red List . Protected vegetation in the valley of the Siverskyi Donets are the pine forests and other endemic plant communities on deposits from the Cretaceous , steppe , meadow and swamp vegetation. 20 plant species are endemic.

A little above the monastery on the left bank of the Siversky Donets there is an area with oak trees that are 200 to 300 years old. Most of them reach a height of 25 m with a diameter of about 80 cm, and some trees reach a diameter of over one and a half meters. In one of the clearings, the oldest oak tree in eastern Ukraine, at 600 years old, grows with a height of 29 m, a diameter of around 2 m and a trunk circumference of 6.3 m.

fauna

Around 300 vertebrate species live in the park, 50 of which are on the Red List of Rare Species of Ukraine. These include 43 mammals, 194 birds, 10 reptiles, 9 amphibians and 40 fish.

history

There are 129 archaeological sites in the park from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages; 73 of them are under monument protection. In 1980 a museum complex was established around the former monastery of St. Mary. These include the Svyatohirsk Monastery , built between the 13th and 16th centuries, on a rock on the right bank of the Siversky Donets. The complex also includes historical monuments such as the monumental, 27 m high statue of the Russian communist and revolutionary Fyodor Sergejew ("Artyom"), which was created in 1927 by Ivan Petrovich Kawaleridze. Next to the statue is a memorial commemorating the German-Soviet War .
