The Teniente Agripino Enciso National Park is located in the Boquerón Department on the Ruta Transchaco in Paraguay , around 700 km from Asunción . It was founded in 1980 and has an area of ​​442 km².

climate

The hottest months are October to February with maximum average temperatures of 34–35 ° C, the coolest months are June to August with minimum temperatures of 13–14 ° C. The months with the highest precipitation are between November and March with 95–140 mm, the months with the lowest precipitation are June to September with 10–25 mm. Floods occur between September and December. The annual rainfall is 835 mm.

fauna

The fauna in the national park includes jaguars , puma , jaguarundi , ocelot , tapir , giant anteater , armadillos and three species of peccaries , including the Chaco peccary , which was thought to be extinct until 1975 , as well as reptiles such as caimans , rattlesnakes , green iguana and turtles . Due to the relatively uniformity of the habitat of the upper Chaco , the species richness among the birds is very limited. There are vultures , blue- fronted parrots and an abundant population of monk parakeets in the park . The pink tarantula ( Grammostola rosea ) and butterflies are also very common .

The vegetation consists mainly of thick, thorny Chaco forest with a low canopy and open undergrowth. Here also grows the as cherimoya called samuhú .

The Teniente National Park (German: Leutnant ) Agripino Enciso is named after a hero of the Chaco War . It is the most easily accessible national park in the Chaco, but has very few visitors. A two-kilometer circular hiking trail leads through the park, the rest can be explored with a machete. There is a visitor center and shared accommodation for 20 people. Camping is also possible, but prior approval must be obtained from the environmental authority SEAM.
