National Association of Bibliophiles
The National Association of Bibliophiles (NP NSB, Russian: Некоммерческое партнерство “Национальный союз библиофилов” ) is a social organization in which Russia's bibliophiles have come together. It has existed as a legal person since 2010.
History of origin
The story goes back to 1990, when the Organization of Russian Bibliophiles (ORB) was founded, which brought together around 100 lovers of old, rare books on an informal basis. The fruitful 20-year existence (more than ten exhibitions and 200 editions) ended in 2010. The desire to make qualitative changes to the structure and activities of ORB prompted the bibliophiles to set up a new, legally structured organization - the non-commercial partnership National Association of Bibliophiles - to found the legal successor of the Organization of Russian Bibliophiles. On October 22nd, 2010 the founding meeting of NP NSB took place in the State Literary Museum in Moscow.
On January 28, 2011, the first general meeting of NP NSB was held in Moscow, which elected the five-person council of partnership by secret ballot. Mikhail Vadimowitsch Seslavinski , head of the Federal Agency for Printing and Mass Communications and a well-known Moscow bibliophile and book customer expert, became the chairman .
membership
NP NSB currently has around 100 people. Admission takes place once a year at the general assembly of NP NSB, whereby all candidates each have to submit three letters of recommendation from active members and must meet one of the following criteria:
- Presence of a private library of a bibliophile nature;
- Presence of at least ten research papers (own publications) in the field of book studies;
- at least five years of work in the field of antiquarian books.
Among the members of NP NSB are well-known scientists, journalists and writers, including Pavel Gusew, editor-in-chief of the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper and chairman of the Moscow Union of Journalists, Aleksander Sigov, full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN), Konstantin Ernst, producer and general director von OAO 1. Kanal, Willi Petritskij, cultural scientist and patriarch of Russian bibliophiles, Lev Mnuchin, researcher of the work of Marina Tsvetaeva and the history of Russian emigration, Jurij Rostovzew, editor-in-chief of the Studentscheskij Meridian magazine, Olga Tarakanova, professor and author of the only Russian textbook "Antiquarian Book", as well as Mikhail Afanassiev, Director of the State Public Historical Library of Russia. They are all united by a passion for book collecting and research into rare books.
activity
The task of NP NSB is to bring together those interested in book collecting, to obtain and disseminate information about the movement of Russian bibliophiles, to expand the boundaries of Russian book culture and to popularize the experiences of private book collecting. International scientific conferences “Bibliophilia and Private Collections” took place under the care of NP NSB (2011, 2013). Editions dedicated to bibliophilia appear in small editions (including monographs, magazines, information sheets from the meetings, exhibition catalogs and illustrated books). Thematic exhibitions are also organized.
Round table discussions on the occasion of memorable historical events are held at annual general meetings. Such events included 400 years of the Romanov House (2013), 200 years of the Patriotic War (2012) and 125 years of Anna Akhmatova. Since 2013, NP NSB has been giving awards together with the edition “About Books. Magazine for Bibliophiles ” the annual“ NP Smirnow-Sokolskij ”award for the contribution to the development of Russian bibliophilia.
NP NSB participates in international and national book fairs, where it sells small editions of scientific works and treatises on problems of bibliophilia.
Clubs
Members of the partnership work in more than 10 bibliophile clubs of Russia, Ukraine and Israel doing research on the theory and history of rare books. The Bibliophile Beehive Club, chaired by MW Seslavinsky, is active in Moscow. Club meetings cover topics such as the history of Russian bibliophilia (including excellent book collections from the past), the art of books and bookbinding. Regular club-goers include bibliophiles, representatives from libraries and museums, antique dealers and collectors. Some meetings are held jointly with the largest Russian museums and libraries, including the State Literary Museum, the Russian State Library, the State Public Historical Library of Russia, the All-Russia Pushkin Museum and the Anna Akhmatova Museum.
For the first time in the history of Russian bibliophilia, joint meetings of the clubs of bibliophiles in Moscow and Saint Petersburg took place in 2012 and 2013. Each session is accompanied by a one-day exhibition of rare issues from the collections of club participants. From 2011 to 2013, based on the results of the club meetings, 20 to 45 pages of information sheets with the main theses of the contributions were published. The club magazine “Mitteilungen des Bibliophilen” has been published since 2014.
