Native Sense (The New Duets) is a music album by Chick Corea and Gary Burton , released in 1997 on Concord Records .

The album

Native Sense is the fifth album that Chick Corea and Gary Burton recorded together. The collaboration between the two musicians began in 1972 with the ECM album Crystal Silence . Since then, the duo has stood for a “lyrical and virtuoso interplay of vibraphone and piano”. The two musicians also performed occasionally in the 1980s and early 1990s.

For the duo's 25th birthday, Native Sense was created for Corea's own label Stretch Records (distributed by Concord). Burton also plays the marimba in two pieces ([2], [4]); Corea has been working intensively with this instrument since the album was recorded.

Burton did not contribute any of his own compositions to the musical material of the record. Corea composed the pieces Native Sense , Rhumbata and Post Script especially for this album. Tango '92 was originally conceived as a film score, but has not been used otherwise before. The record also contains material from other composers. Two bagatelles by Béla Bartók , which were actually written for piano, are set up here for the duo. With Corea's Postscript, the bagatelles form the center of the album. At the end of the album, Four in One is a composition by the early Thelonious Monk .

Reviews

Native Sense is seen in the criticism as "amiable" and as "successful and successful". The two “congenial partners” can “still surprise us in the most pleasant way with their colorful balls, which they throw at each other with dreamlike security”. (according to Marcus Woelfle). It was further praised for its sophistication and perfection, Werner Stiefel wrote:

"A pianist and a vibraphonist can hardly play together more refined and harmonious than the two of them!"
