The natterer arassari ( Selenidera nattereri ) is a species of bird in the toucan family. The species occurs in South America. It was named after the Austrian zoologist Johann Natterer . The IUCN classifies the Arassari as LC IUCN 3 1st svg(= least concern - not endangered). As with other short-nosed toucans, there is a noticeable sexual dimorphism . No subspecies are distinguished.

Appearance

The Natterer Arassari reaches a body length of 30 to 33 centimeters. The males reach a wing length of 12.2 to 13.6 centimeters, the tail is between 9.9 and 10.9 centimeters long and the beak length is 5.4 to 6.7 centimeters. The females have similar body dimensions, but have a slightly shorter beak with a beak length of 4.7 to 5.4 centimeters.

The males have a black forehead and a black crown. The neck, throat and chest are also black. A yellow spot stretches from the region below the feathered eye area to the ear covers. There is a narrow yellow band in the neck. The top of the body is olive green, on the flanks there is a large orange spot. The thighs, like the under tail-coverts, are red. The beak is predominantly red with a dark green to black ridge. There are black spots at the base of the upper and lower beak. The upper and lower beak have vertical white markings, the tip of the beak is yellowish-white. The featherless eye area is green, the iris brown-red. Feet and legs are gray-green. In the females, the neck, throat, forehead, crown and chest are maroon. So far, only young birds that were a little older have been observed in the wild. They were very similar to the adult birds, but mainly had dull red under-tail coverts.

Can be confused with the Reinwardt-Arassari . The distribution areas of the two species do not overlap. The Reinwardt-Arassari's bill is also dark red, but the ridge and tip are black. The distribution area of the Natterer-Arassaris borders on that of the pepper eater , which also belongs to the short-billed arassaris. But it has a horn-colored beak with small black and blue color markings. There is a distant resemblance to the green arassari , but this one has a yellow chest and a yellow belly.

Distribution area, habitat and way of life

The distribution area extends with gaps from the east of Colombia over the south of Venezuela and the north of Brazil to Guiana and French Guiana in the east. The requirements of the Natterer Arassaris in terms of their habitat and their reproductive biology have so far only been insufficiently investigated. Basically, he is an inhabitant of humid lowland forests. He prefers forest areas that line rivers. So far, the stomach contents of six individuals have been examined. All contained only fruit. The breeding season probably falls between March and May.
