Naturefund is a non-profit nature conservation association based in Wiesbaden, Germany. The association was founded in 2003 and aims to buy land for nature and to reforest forests. Naturefund has various nature conservation projects in Germany and around the world. The association is financed through donations and membership fees from private individuals and companies, as well as grants for projects from government agencies such as the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development .

tasks and goals

Naturefund aims to buy 3.5 million square kilometers of land and protect it in accordance with its statutes. In addition, Naturefund helps with the renaturation of ecosystems and forests.

With the approach of buying land for nature, Naturefund is taking a special path in nature conservation. By buying land, the association expects a safe and quick implementation of nature conservation measures. After purchase, the areas will be preserved or partially renatured together with other nature conservation organizations in the interests of nature conservation and landscape management. In addition, Naturefund is reforesting areas in order to preserve endangered natural forests and ecosystems.

Naturefund always works with local organizations on projects. In most cases, the local partner organization later also becomes the owner and custodian of the land. Naturfund focuses on the management, controls the quality of the measures and takes care of the acquisition of funds for the projects. The local organizations are responsible for the implementation of the measures, as well as the ongoing support and maintenance of the protection status of the areas.

history

The association was founded in 2003 as a non-profit association. Naturefund's original concept was to buy land for nature. Since 2007, Naturefund has also started projects to protect forests and plant trees in the wake of climate change.

Projects

Since its founding, Naturefund has currently (as of May 2017) around 37 projects in progress or already completed. The majority of the projects are in Germany. In addition, Naturefund operates reforestation and forest protection projects, mainly internationally, such as in Madagascar, Bolivia or Honduras.

Naturefund projects include:

  • Hamberger Moor: Current project with the planned purchase of 50,000 m² of private land. Partners are the NABU Hambergen and the lower nature conservation authority Osterholz-Scharmbeck. The aim of the project is to rewet the mostly degenerated areas and to turn them into a bog in the regeneration status.
  • Baltic island of Kirr : Purchase of currently 95,789 m² (as of May 2017) or 9.5 hectares of land for nature conservation , initiated by Naturefund. The Vorpommern National Park Office is the local partner and supervisor of the areas. The island of Kirr is a bird sanctuary on the southern Baltic coast. It belongs to the national park "Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft" and is a unique biotope with its branching tidal creek system , the extensive salt marshes and intact coastal flood marshes .
  • Madagascar : Naturefund is planting trees at three project locations and at the same time converting smallholders to the dynamic agroforestry method. The areas are 1. Makirovana in the northeast, 2. Orinjia in the far north and 3. Anakafobe in the middle of the island. The project is supported by funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Hand-in-Hand Fund of Deutsche Umwelthilfe & Rapunzel Naturkost.
  • Bolivia : In the highlands of Bolivia, near the city of Cochabamba , Naturefund is reforesting in the Tunari National Park . In addition, the Mollesnejta research station is located on site, where the cultivation method of dynamic agroforestry is researched and further developed together with Naturefund. The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is involved in the project with funds.

Among other things, Naturefund received the National Energy Globe Award in 2011 and 2013 . In 2011, the prize was awarded for the tree planting project in Honduras.
