The natural history station of the city of Linz is an institution that belongs to the botanical garden in the city green and road maintenance division of the city of Linz's municipal authorities . She is responsible for questions of nature and species protection as well as urban ecology .

history

In 1953, Mayor Ernst Koref summoned the Viennese biologist Ewald Schild to Linz to advance scientific research. The “Microbiological Station Schild” as a research laboratory for scientific and applied microscopy , microphotography and micro- cinematography was built at Roseggerstraße 22, right next to the Botanical Garden of the City of Linz. In cooperation with the adult education center , guided tours and courses for adults took place. Schild ran the research station until 1962.

In 1963 Hans Groß took over the management of the institute. Under him the name was changed to Natural History Station. Mineral science and astronomy completed the area of responsibility. Under Hans Groß, the magazine "Apollo", which was taken over by the nature conservation youth, was published for the first time by the natural history station in 1965. 54 issues had appeared by 1978. Gerhard Pfitzner was appointed the next manager in 1978. The objectives of the research station have been changed and expanded. Pfitzner focused on researching and cataloging the natural balance of Linz. This data collection serves as the basis for urban planning and nature conservation. The magazine ÖKO.L, which was awarded the Binding Prize for Nature and Environmental Protection in 1992 , first appeared in 1979. One aim of the editors was to convey scientific topics and research work to a broad readership in an understandable way.

In 1997 the natural history station was incorporated into the office for nature and environmental protection. The biologist Friedrich Schwarz was entrusted with the management . The station moved to the New Town Hall by 2004. A major project of the natural history station of the city of Linz was the groundwork for the declaration of 6.6 hectares of the Traun-Donau-Auen in Linz as a nature reserve in 2004. The Traunauen have been " Natura 2000 - European protected area" since then .

The natural history station has been located on the Gugl again since 2005 and is connected to the botanical garden. Since the restructuring of the Linz municipal authorities in 2005, the botanical garden and the natural history station have belonged to the urban green and road maintenance division.

The natural history station of the city of Linz has been awarded the Upper Austrian State Prize for Nature and Environment several times and in 1992 the Liechtenstein Binding Prize for Nature and Environmental Protection .
