The Diemelsee nature reserve with a size of 18.70  hectares is located in the Diemelsee municipality in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1965 because of its importance for the bird world. In 1982 it was again designated as an NSG. The state road L 393 runs along the northern edge of the NSG. The NSG is located within the Diemelsee Nature Park .

Area description

The nature reserve is located on the western tip of the Itterarm or western arm of the Diemelsee. There the Itter flows into the reservoir. Despite the name, the lake area only takes up about a quarter of the NSG. When the water level is low in summer, dry areas are characterized by pioneer corridors. The pioneer corridors are so-called muddy corridors and two-tooth societies. In the bank area there are reeds and dense willow bushes. Areas with quarry forest-like structures can be found along the Itter.

Protection purpose

According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated a nature reserve because of its importance for the bird world. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
