Setup date 1992

The nature reserve Am Mühlenberg near Adorf with a size of around 33 hectares is located north of Adorf almost on the state border with North Rhine-Westphalia in the municipality of Diemelsee in the Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1992 because of its particular wealth of plant species. The NSG is located within the Diemelsee Nature Park .

Area description

The nature reserve is covered by forest. Part of the area is occupied by a canyon forest. Almost the entire Mühlenberg belongs to the NSG. The subsoil consists of the volcanic rocks diabase and scarf stone from the Devonian . In the area there are a few small rocks and a smaller area with a block pile . There are great spatial differences in the forest area. These differences in location result in very different forest communities.

Flora and fauna

The largest areas in the NSG cover nutrient-poor acidic beech forests . This is the forest company Hainsimsen-Buchen-Wald. In the lower slope area there are oak - hornbeam forests. On steep, sunny slopes there is an acidic grove and sessile oak forest. On the ridge as well as on lower and middle slopes with a good supply of nutrients you will find barley-beech forest. On boulders and rock debris slopes thrives Norway maple - Summer Linden -Forest and Sommerlinden- mountain elm - Sycamore -Forest. There are also larger spruce stands in the NSG . The ravine forest in the NSG owes its existence to a narrowing of the Rhenetal . Through them, the cool air flowing off in this valley floor is directed onto the eastern slope of the Mühlenberg and creates a cooler local climate here. In the tree layer of the ravine forest you can find the winter linden as well as the summer linden and mountain elm.

249 vascular plants were found in the nature reserve. These included the forest species such as common psyllium , liverwort , wild garlic , Märzenbecher and whorl-leaved white root . On the south-west exposed slope of the Mühlenberg swallowweed , common cat's paw and field stone whorl were found . On belay the southwest slope of Muhlenberg also comes Elsbeere ago. The Nordic striped fern also occurs on the rocks . Another specialty are Alpine currant and Alpine ziest .

The red kite , black woodpecker and stock dove breed in the nature reserve . 64 butterfly species were detected. The butterflies are typical forest species. There were u. a. Large Schiller butterfly , imperial coat , C butterfly and forest board game found. The left-handed diaper snail ( Vertigo pusilla ) is one of the 16 proven snail species . The left-wound diaper snail has its only place of discovery in the NSG here in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district and numerous snails of this type have also been found.

Protection purpose

According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated a nature reserve because of its botany. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
