Nature reserve on the Buchenlied near Wirmighausen

The nature reserve Auf der Buchenlied near Wirmighausen with a size of 19.26 hectares is located east of Wirmighausen in the Diemelsee municipality in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1990 because of its special diversity of plant species. The area is also designated as an FFH area.

Area description

The nature reserve consists of three areas. The two northern sub-areas are exclusively covered with red beech forest. In the southern part of the NSG, only the northern part is covered with beech forest, while in the southern part there are pastures , fields and semi-arid grassland . The semi-arid grassland is located in a former mining area . The semi-arid grassland is grazed by a shepherd with sheep .

In the southern part of the NSG, today's semi-arid grassland, the strontium mineral cölestin was mined until 1914 . The mining took place both in opencast mines and in tunnels . It was the only cölestin deposit that was mined in Germany.

Flora and fauna

Because of the Zechstein subsoil, the limestone beech forests have a rich herb flora with early bloomers such as the Märzenbecher and other rare species. The beech forest is mainly the forest society forest barley-beech forest. In the north-western part of the NSG, you will find extensive flower carpets with a Märzenbecher in spring. Later in the year, there will be other early bloomers such as yellow anemone and wood anemone . In the beech forest of the southern part of the area, wild garlic blooms extensively in spring on deep soils . The semi-dry lawn consists of the plant community gentian-feather-twinkle lawn. Ordinary fringed gentian and German fringed gentian bloom in semi-arid grass in autumn . In the forest of the NSG there are individual orchids such as mountain forest hyacinth and large two-leaf . Other rare species are the Turk's Union lily , daphne and stately orchid . Until 2008, 23 species of higher plants were recorded in the NSG.

In addition to the occurrence of numerous rare plant species, numerous rare insect species can be found in the protected area. So far 65 butterfly species, 29 of them butterfly species, have been identified in the NSG. In the semi-arid grassland, the species Dunkler Dickkopfffalter , Kleiner Würfel-Dickkopfffalter , Mattscheckiger Braun-Dickkopfffalter , Scheck-Tagule and Sechsfleck-Ram were found . The species Kaisermantel and yellow-cubed thick-headed butterfly have been identified in the beech forest .

There are 29 species of ground beetle in the area. Among the species of beetle found is the short-vaulted ground beetle , which is endangered in Germany.

The long-feeler thorn-insect is among the six proven grasshopper species .

A total of 89 species of spiders can be found in the NSG, including the dwarf spider ( Silometopus bonessi ) and the canopy spider ( Lepthypanthes lepthypantiformis ). The canopy spider was first detected here in Hesse .

The tree pipit occurs as a breeding bird . In 2006, two areas of the tree pipit were found here.

Protection purpose

According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated a nature reserve because of its botany. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
