The short-domed or convex ground beetle ( Carabus convexus ) is a beetle of the real ground beetle ( Carabus ).

features

The short-domed ground beetle reaches a body length of 14 to 20 millimeters and is one of the medium-sized species of beetle in Europe, but at the same time, together with the dove beetle ( Carabus nitens ), one of the smallest species of the genus in Europe. Its body is black, especially the elytra and the pronotum have a bright blue to blue-black sheen. The elytra are very finely dotted.

The beetle is distributed in several subspecies over large areas of Europe and Asia and is mostly common. Its distribution area extends from the Pyrenees in southern Europe over most of Europe and parts of Asia to Siberia . It can be found both in the lowlands and at higher altitudes.

Way of life

The short-arched ground beetle lives mainly in fields and in unwooded areas, more rarely in forests. It is eurytopic and usually prefers damp locations ( hygrophilous ). However, near the sea it can also prefer dry habitats ( xerophilic )

It predatory feeds mainly on other insects and on snails and worms. It also goes to carrion . It is nocturnal, but can occasionally also be found during the day, and is present from April to September. Hibernation takes place as an imago , reproduction takes place in spring.
