Big Aa in the NSG

The Große Aa nature reserve with an area of 19.2  hectares is located in the urban area of Bad Wünnenberg in the Paderborn district . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1996 by the district council with the Büren-Wünnenberg landscape plan. The area has been protected since 2004 as part of the FFH area Bredelar, Stadtwald Marsberg and Fürstenberger Wald (DE 4518-305), which also includes the entire surrounding forest. The NSG borders directly on the district boundary.

Area description

The NSG encompasses the valley of the Große Aa from the district border to the Aabach dam , whereby a branch of the dam is part of the protected area. The Aa flows in the NSG with a slight gradient in a narrow valley of the valley, on average 50-100 m wide, which is cut approx. 70 m deep into the surrounding edge heights. The flood plain is swelly under the influence of slope water and in places swamped. The vegetation of the grassland areas there consists mainly of wet meadows. Most of the wet meadows have been abandoned, tall perennials and sedges dominate the fallow vegetation. In the fallow meadows there is a larger occurrence of the swamp stendrums . Large sedge stands occur in small areas. Except for shorter areas, the stream is lined with alder fringes, which in places expand into alder forests. The NSG area is mostly farmed extensively. Tall perennials and sedges dominate. The overall extent of the stream is unobstructed and is around 2 to 3 m wide. The meandering brook is 0.5 m deep and has a stony bed.
