The Große Aa is an approximately 1.7 km long, southeastern and orographically right tributary of the Aabach in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Paderborn ( Germany ).

course

The Große Aa rises in East Westphalia around 7 km north of the border with Hesse between Bad Wünnenberg in the north-north-west and Marsberg in the east at the interface between the Brilon plateau in the west and Sintfeld in the north. Its source is around 4 km northeast of the Brilon district of Madfeld or 300 m (depending on the beeline ) north of around 490  m above sea level. NHN high Liebfrauenberg (southwest foothills of the 502.6  m high Totenkopf ) at around 470  m altitude. It is located on the northern border of the Diemelsee Nature Park . The “sister stream” of the Große Aa, the Kleine Aa , rises about 1.5 km northeast of its source.

The Große Aa flows entirely in the " Aabachtal nature reserve " through the wooded landscape in the transition area between Obermarsberger Wald in the east and Madfelder Wald in the west. Accompanied by forest and hiking trails, the stream runs right along the border of the Diemelsee nature park. Initially the Große Aa flows a little bit to the southwest and the rest to the northwest.

Finally , the Große Aa flows about 3.35 km (as the crow flies) northeast of Madfeld between the densely wooded heights of the Madfelder Wald at about 385  m in the Aabach coming from the southwest .

Watershed

The source area of the Great Aa lies on the Rhine-Weser watershed . While the water of the Große Aa, which runs to the north, drains into the Rhine via Aabach , Afte , Alme and Lippe , mostly in a west-northwest direction , that of the rivers that arise southwest of their headwaters flows via Hoppecke and Diemel or in the context of the south the Momeke and Dütlingsbach brooks that swell directly over the Diemel in a mainly north-easterly direction into the Weser .
