The Kleine Aa (also called Kleiner Aabach ) is an approximately 5.5 km long, south-eastern and orographically right tributary of the Aabach or the Aabach reservoir in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Paderborn ( Germany ).

course

The Kleine Aa rises in East Westphalia around 7 km north of the border with Hesse between Bad Wünnenberg in the north-north-west and Marsberg in the east at the interface between the Brilon plateau in the west and Sintfeld in the north. Its source is around 4.5 km west of Marsberg and around 5.4 km northeast of the Madfeld district of Brilon . Their water flows from a small wetland area that extends around 650 m northeast of the Totenkopf ( 502.6  m above sea  level ) or around 50 m (distances as the crow flies ) north-northeast of the Totenkopfstein at an average height of 465  m .

The Karpke ("Kalter Siepen") rises a few hundred meters northeast of the source of the stream , and not far to the south is the northern border of the Diemelsee Nature Park and the source streams of the Dütlingsbach . The “sister stream” of the Kleine Aa, the Große Aa , rises around 1.5 km southwest of its source.

The Kleine Aa flows through the landscape in the transition area from Obermarsberger Wald in the southeast and Madfelder Wald in the west, and Fürstenberger Wald in the northeast. Accompanied by forest and hiking trails, the stream runs mainly northwards, feeding a total of seven ponds and passing a former glassworks between the second and third of these still waters .

Finally , the Kleine Aa flows into the southeast arm of the Aabach reservoir through which the Aabach flows, around 3 km south of Fürstenberg at a height of 345.7  m . Since the construction of this small reservoir, the last 800 m stretch of the stream up to its former confluence with the Aabach has been flooded by water from the reservoir; in total, the Kleine Aa is about 6.3 km long.

Watershed

The source area of the Kleine Aa lies on the Rhine-Weser watershed . While the water of the Kleine Aa, which runs north, drains into the Rhine via Aabach , Afte , Alme and Lippe , mostly in a west-north-west direction , that of the Dütlingsbach , which rises south of its headwaters , flows over the Diemel in a mainly north-east direction Weser .
