Gaisberg natural forest reserve
The Gaisberg natural forest reserve as a protected part of the landscape (GLT00068) is located directly below the rugged western slope of the Gaisberg summit in the area around the capon walls in the city of Salzburg .
history
The reserve is 17.4 hectares and was placed under protection in 1988. The Gaisbergrund hiking trail crosses the protected area and enables a good view of the habitat even in the area of the steep rock walls.
ecology
The majority of the forest, which is over 100 to 150 years old, is a montane spruce-fir-beech forest. In the lower area, ash and maple also characterize the stock. The spruce partially forms pure stands. Most of the terrain is steep and difficult to walk on. In the particularly steep central part of the "capon walls" there is a remnant of a pine stand and remarkable rock vegetation with whitebeam and mountain ash, Crab apple and rock pear. Such mixed forests, rich in niches, are among the most species-rich habitats in Central Europe after the alluvial forests, the diversity is high both in the herbaceous plant species and in the bird world. The rare hazel grouse breed here, the black woodpecker and the white-backed woodpecker look for food here. Rare orchid species such as the mosquito-wort, the fragrant hendel-wort and the pale orchid enrich the herb layer.
