Naum Jakowlewitsch Wilenkin ( Russian Наум Яковлевич Виленкин , English Naum Yakovlevich Vilenkin), (born October 30, 1920 in Moscow , † 1991 ) was a Soviet mathematician of Russian nationality, who is known for his popular science books.

Live and act

Wilenkin studied at Lomonossow University until 1942 , where he completed his habilitation under Alexander Kurosch in 1950 . From 1951 he was a professor. He taught at various Moscow universities and was from 1961 at the Moscow Pedagogical University. His areas of work were algebra, topology, functional analysis, theory of real functions and combinatorics. Among other things, he was an employee of Israel Gelfand and co-author of one of its volumes in the textbook series on distributions.

He mainly devoted himself to improving mathematical education in schools and received the Uschinsky Prize in 1976 for his school books.
