Rhizosomichthys totae is a species of fish family of Slickheads and the only member of the monotypic genus Rhizosomichthys . The species is endemic to the Laguna de Tota (Lake Tota) in the Colombian Andes at an altitude of 3,015 metersand is believed to be extinct.

description

Rhizosomichthys totae reached a maximum length of 13.8 centimeters. The body was surrounded by seven fat pad segments.

Way of life

Apart from the fact that the fish was found in the deep areas of the Laguna de Tota, almost nothing is known about its way of life.

die out

Rhizosomichthys totae is only known of ten specimens collected between 1942 and 1957. The causes of extinction are presumably due to the re-enactment of the rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) introduced in 1939 and to seismic activity, which led to a critical drop in the water level and thus to the mass extinction of entire fish populations.
