from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nauru Basketball Association (NBA), also Nauru Island Basketball Association (NIBA), is the national basketball association of the Republic of Nauru . The association is a member of the Nauru Olympic Committee .

history

A Nauruan national team took part in basketball at the first South Pacific Games in 1963 , and fourth place in this event remains the country's greatest success to this day. As early as 1975, the association became a member of the Oceania Basketball Confederation and thus part of the world basketball association FIBA . Due to the financial prosperity from the phosphate mining , Nauru was able to send a team to the South Pacific Games on a regular basis , between 2001 and 2015 no selection teams took part in international tournaments for financial reasons. There is currently both a men's national team and a women's national team .

In 1960 the association started holding local competitions with five teams; in 2006 there were 26 men's and ten women's teams on the island. The game is played on three outdoor areas and in one hall. The Constitution Day Tournament takes place every year in May .
