The Nauru House is a 190 m high skyscraper in Melbourne . It is one of the foreign properties that was acquired by the island republic of Nauru in the 1980s. The skyscraper is known locally as the Birdshit Tower , as the owner Nauru achieved great wealth by exporting phosphates from seabird excrement . The building is often named after its address 80 Collins Street . At the time of its inauguration in April 1977, it was briefly the tallest skyscraper in Australia before being surpassed by the MLC Center in Sydney after three months .
In 2004 the building was occupied by creditors of the Nauruan government, so that it had to vacate its institutions such as a branch of Air Nauru , the Nauruan consulate and the presidential suite. In November 2004 , Nauru House was sold to the Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC) for approximately $ 140 million .
