The Rialto Towers - also known as the Rialto Center or The Rialto - is a skyscraper located in Melbourne , Australia . The 63 storey and 251 m high building was designed by Gerard de Preu and Partners and built between 1982 and 1986. After their inauguration, the Rialto Towers were briefly the tallest building outside of North America, but they had to surrender the title to the OUB Center in Singapore after just one month . It was the only time that the tallest building outside of North America was in Australia, as this title was usually held by European or Asian skyscrapers.
The Rialto Towers consist of two skyscrapers: a smaller north tower, which is 185 m high, and the larger south tower. The building reaches the official height of 251 meters with a small elevator machine room, which towers over the main roof of the south tower by 4 m. The antenna that was installed later rises up even higher, namely 270 m, but is not part of the building's architecture.
The observation deck on the top floor remained unused for almost 8 years before it was opened to the public on July 19, 1994. The Rialto Towers are the fifth tallest skyscraper in Melbourne and the sixth tallest in Australia. In the immediate vicinity, on the other side of the Yarra River , in the district of Southbank, is the Eureka Tower , which is the second tallest residential building in Australia.
