The 63 Building (Hangeul: 63 빌딩 or 육삼 빌딩), official name: Hanwha 63 City , is a skyscraper in the South Korean capital, Seoul .
history
When it was completed in 1985, the 63 Building was the tallest building outside of North America at 249 meters, displacing the 240-meter-high Lomonosov University in Moscow from the top of this ranking after 32 years. However, it was already outbid a year later by the 2 m higher Rialto Towers in Melbourne, Australia.
The client and main user was the insurance company Korea Life Insurance , after which the building was also named as the Korea Life Insurance Building . It was built for the 1988 Olympic Games to serve as a landmark. The foundation stone was laid in 1979. The building was completed in May 1985 and inaugurated two months later. In 2002 the building became the property of the South Korean company Hanwha and was renamed Hanwha 63 City . Since 2003 it has been towered over by the 256 m high Hyperion Tower , which is also located in Seoul. But it is still the fourth tallest building in Seoul. Including the attached antenna, it is even 274 m high, but this height is not included in official lists. The construction costs amounted to 180 billion won , which today corresponds to around 540 million euros.
particularities
The facade of the 63 building, which consists of 14,000 glass panels, is completely gilded. It is still the tallest building in the world that is completely gold-plated. A total of around 5 kg of 24-carat gold was used for the facade. Based on the gilding, the top floor is also called the 63 Golden Tower . It serves as a viewing platform and art gallery ; it is the highest exhibition room in the world. The building also houses an aquarium , a wax museum and a cinema; these attractions are also summarized under the term 63 SQUARE . There are a few elevators in the building that go directly from the ground floor to the observation deck, they take around 25 seconds for this route. There are still elevators that can only be used by lovers .
