The Nautilus , also known as the UC3 Nautilus , was a privately owned submarine built in Denmark . It was completed in 2008. The designer was Peter Madsen . With a length of 17.8 meters and a weight of 40 tons when fully equipped, it is the largest submarine built by a private individual. It was funded by crowdfunding and had a maximum diving depth of 100 m.
