biography

education

Peter Madsen finished his school career with the Danish Abitur. He broke off a later engineering degree .

Submarine construction

UC3 Nautilus 2008

Madsen has built three privately financed submarines. The prototype was the Freya in 2002 . In 2005, the Kraka submarine followed , which was 12 meters long and twice as large as Freya . It weighed eight tons, had a diesel engine with 12 kW and an electric motor with 4.5 kW. Freya had a diving lock through which a diver could leave the boat below.

His last and largest submarine, completed in 2008, was the UC3 Nautilus . With a length of 17.8 meters and a weight of 40 tons when fully equipped, it was probably the largest submarine ever built by a private individual.

Rocket construction

The Tycho Deep Space capsule was launched with the rescue rocket on August 12, 2012

Madsen has also been involved in building rocket engines and rockets for many years . He was a member of the Danish “Amateur Rocket Club” and worked in the “Aurora Project Group”. Together with Kristian von Bengtson , he founded the Copenhagen Suborbitals association in 2008 with the aim of bringing a person into space with a privately financed and built rocket in just a few years.

In 2010 the HEAT-1X-Tycho Brahe rocket made a first attempt at launch . This failed, the rocket engine did not ignite. A second start attempt was made on June 3, 2011. The missile reached a height of 2.8 km. On July 27, 2012, the two-stage Smaragd-1 rocket from Copenhagen Suborbitals was successfully launched in the Baltic Sea. On August 11, 2012, the space capsule Tycho Deep Space was launched with the rescue rocket, it reached an altitude of about one kilometer. The rescue rocket was detonated from the space capsule as planned and the capsule landed safely with the help of the parachutes. The first flight of the rocket Sapphire took place on June 23, 2013, where it flew 8.2 km high.

In 2014 Madsen left the Copenhagen Suborbitals after a long argument. He then founded his own rocket company, Raketmadsens Rumlaboratorium , as a competitor .

He had planned the next rocket launch on August 26, 2017. Copenhagen Suborbitals also planned a rocket launch for that day.

Murder of journalist Kim Wall

On the evening of August 10, 2017, Peter Madsen, accompanied by the Swedish journalist Kim Wall, left the port of Copenhagen in the submarine. The journalist had been invited by him for a report at short notice. That same night, her partner filed a missing person report and started a search for the boat. The Nautilus appeared on August 11, south of Copenhagen in the Køgebucht , allegedly with technical problems, and shortly afterwards sank within sight of a yacht. Madsen could be saved; he was immediately arrested by the Danish police and suspected of murdering his companion.

Madsen initially claimed that he dropped Wall on a peninsula by Copenhagen harbor before it went down. Inside the recovered submarine, however, investigators found traces of blood, the underpants and tights of the missing reporter. According to his lawyer, Madsen testified before the examining magistrate on August 12th that Wall had died of an accident on board. Then he threw the still complete and clothed body into the sea (as a burial at sea ). These statements became public on August 21st. On the same day, however, a cyclist found a female torso on the shores of the island of Amager , south of Copenhagen near the Koebucht . The forensic medical analysis showed that the head and limbs had been deliberately severed. 15 stab wounds were found on the torso. A DNA analysis revealed that these were the remains of the missing Kim Wall. A preliminary inquest also indicated that the torso was intended to be held to the ocean floor by a piece of metal attached to it.

On August 24, Madsen specified the alleged accident: Wall had fallen on the tower hatch on her head and she died of the injuries she suffered. However, Wall's skull, found on October 6, showed no injuries on initial examinations. During the investigation, among other things, videos were found on Madsen's hard drive in which women were tortured , tortured, abused and finally killed . At the end of October 2017, in view of the new forensic findings , Madsen changed his statement again, now to the effect that Wall had died of carbon monoxide poisoning in the submarine. Then he cut up the body.

The prosecutor suspected a sexual murder motive based on the nature of the stab wounds on Wall's lower body and the psychiatric examination results . On January 23, 2018, the prosecutor opened charges against Madsen on suspicion of planned and prepared murder and of disturbing the peace of the dead. She believed Madsen tortured Kim Wall before he murdered her and dismembered her body. She called for life imprisonment , a preventive detention . The trial of Madsen, without a jury at his request , began on March 8, 2018 in Copenhagen . During the trial, details of Madsen's personal life were revealed, such as: B. his preference for snuff films and literature dealing with the torture, impalement and killing of women. Convinced of its dangerousness for fellow human beings, the public prosecutor demanded life imprisonment for Madsen. On April 25, 2018, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. After the unanimous verdict of the judges, Madsen had planned his act, his victim tied up, tortured, sexually abused, murdered and dismembered. In addition, he was prosecuted for violations of shipping law . He appealed against the sentence appeal , but do not against conviction. The trial began on September 5, 2018. Madsen's appeal was rejected on September 26, 2018, confirming the verdict.

The submarine was destroyed due to a court order.

Private life

Madsen was married but lived openly promiscuously . Shortly after Kim Wall's death, his wife divorced him. On December 19, 2019, he married the Russian Jenny Curpen in prison.
