Nawuri (people)

The Nawuri are a people in Ghana with around 14,000 members. Their language is the eponymous Nawuri from the group of the Kwa languages , which is similar to the Gonja . The Nawuri live north of the Volta Reservoir , on the west side of the mouth of the Oti River, northeast of the town of Banda in the East Gonja district .

In 1991 a bloody conflict broke out between the Nawuri and the Gonja people , in which, according to some sources, 78 people died. According to some sources, the Nawuri see themselves as a completely independent people despite the cultural and linguistic proximity to the Gonja. According to the same source, the Gonja see the Navuri as part of their former invasion army.
