Nazianz
Nazianzus ( Nazianzos , Greek. Ναζιανζός) was a city in Cappadocia and is 4 km north-west of today's Turkish village Bekârlar (formerly Nenezi).
The place originally called Nadandos is encountered for the first time in late Roman itineraries ; since 325 it is occupied as a diocese. In 382/83 Gregor von Nazianz succeeded his father of the same name, Gregor von Nazianz the Elder , as bishop. In the 11th century the place was raised to the status of a metropolitan seat, in the 14th century it was called orphaned.
The settlement area is characterized by two mounds of ruins with only small remains of walls and a depression in between, in which a Seljuk Türbe stands today. Nothing is left of the famous octagonal church built by Gregor von Nazianz the Elder.
