The Neapolitan was a horse breed bred in the Kingdom of Naples , which was considered the best for dressage purposes in the Baroque and which helped to shape the breeding of Baroque horses throughout Europe. Two of the six main lines of the Lipizzaner can be traced back to Neapolitans (Conversano and Nepolitano).

The historical background of the breeding is formed by the fact that at the heyday of the Neapolitan, Naples belonged to the Aragonese crown and thus from 1516 to Spain and that a mutual export of horses with the Iberian peninsula ( Andalusians and Lusitanos ) could take place, and that in Naples one to the Equestrianism of Europe, founded by Federigo Griso , existed.

The Neapolitan is often assumed to be extinct after the French army brought horses from Neapolitan family estates to France during the conquest of Italy in 1798 and all noble stud farms were dissolved in 1861 with the deposition of the Bourbons . Recently, however, it has been assumed by some, especially based on the findings of Mauro Aurigi, that the breed will continue to live genetically in the Murgese after it has been transferred to farm breeding farms . Extensive research also seems to have succeeded in finding some surviving specimens of pure offspring in the 1980s, which led to a revival of the Neapolitan and finally to a state re-registration as a breed in 2003. The breed population comprised 25 animals in 2008, and 30 animals were recorded four years later.
