The cloud forest pygmy owl or foggy owl ( Glaucidium nubicola ) is a small species of pygmy owl . It occurs exclusively in South America. The species was not scientifically described until 1999.

Appearance

The cloud forest pygmy owl reaches a height of around 16 centimeters and is relatively sturdy. Feather ears are missing. The tail is relatively short, the head and back are brown. The parting and the sides of the head are finely speckled with white. The face veil lacks a conspicuous border. It is brown with concentric lines. The cloud forest pygmy owl has an occipital face on its neck .

The Costa Rican pygmy owl , which occurs partly in the same range as the cloud forest pygmy owl, has a light plumage from the throat to the middle of the chest without dark markings. The gnome pygmy owl has a more northerly range and is more long-tailed. The Andean pygmy owl and Peruvian pygmy owl are also long-tailed. The screech owl species in the same distribution area are significantly larger and have feather ears.

Distribution area and habitat

The range of the cloud forest pygmy owl are the cloud forests on the Pacific coast from Colombia to western Ecuador. The species may also be found in northern Peru. It is a resident bird that only inhabits the damp primary forests on the steep slopes of the Andes. It occurs at altitudes between 1,400 and 2,000 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The cloud forest pygmy owl is diurnal and crepuscular. It is relatively often hated by other small birds . Its food spectrum consists mainly of insects. Little is known about the reproductive biology of this species. Presumably it breeds between February and June.
