The disease begins with intensely red, lenticular-sized papules , from which somewhat sunken, disc-shaped, to palm-sized, yellow, sclerotic foci with telangiectasias arise, which are surrounded by a slightly raised livid edge. Ulcerations that heal poorly develop in about a third of cases .
About 0.3% of diabetics develop necrobiosis lipoidica. Women are affected more often than men.
