Nedim Şener (* 1966 in Germany ) is an award-winning Turkish investigative journalist and book author. He is currently writing for the Posta newspaper . His topics include, in particular, intelligence activities and corruption.

In March 2011, Şener and Ahmet Şık were charged with allegedly supporting the Ergenekon secret society . They had researched the Islamist scene, in particular the Gülen movement and its links with the ruling AKP government.

Life

Şener was born in Germany in 1966, but grew up in the district of Mengen in the Bolu province . His journalistic career began in 1991 in the newspaper " İlkhaber " (first message). Between 1992 and 1994 he worked for the newspaper Dünya (World) before switching to the daily Milliyet in November 1994 . Şener has published 14 books so far.

Legal proceedings

On June 4, 2010, the 11th Chamber of Serious Crimes in Istanbul acquitted Nedim Şener of allegations of breaching the secrecy of investigations and targeting terrorist organizations in connection with his book on the murder of Hrant Dink . At the hearing on April 28, 2010, the public prosecutor demanded three years in prison. A separate case over the book was conducted before the Second Criminal Court in Istanbul on charges of influencing legal proceedings, insulting officials and violating the secrecy of communications. It ended in December 2010 with an acquittal.

The 2nd Criminal Court in Bakırköy (Istanbul) spoke to Nedim Şener on May 31, 2011 of allegations of breach of the confidentiality of the investigation in connection with an interview he had with Şenay Avcı, the wife of Hanefi Avcı , on September 30th Published in the newspaper in 2010, free.

Nedim Şener was also charged with a message dated October 23, 2010 in Milliyet. Under the heading " Bribes fall out of their pockets" (" Rüşvet paraları ceplerden taşıyor "), some officials at the Bakırköy court were mentioned with initials, and judge Ferşat Aydın thought he was referring to FA. Therefore, two insult and breach of secrecy proceedings were opened. The court acquitted him of both charges on November 1, 2011.

Another case concerned an article that appeared in Milliyet in 2010 under the heading "The black bag was not in the room" (" Siyah çanta odada yoktu "). At the beginning of November 2001, Nedim Şener and the former editor-in-chief of Milliyet, Hasan Çakkalkurt, were tried before the 2nd criminal court in Bakirköy (Istanbul). The judge proposed to discontinue the case against a fine of 20,005 TL (approx. 8,000 euros) per defendant. The defendants can expect a sentence of between 18 months and 4.5 years in prison for allegedly violating the secrecy of files in an investigation against Hanefi Avcı.

On December 7, 2011, proceedings against Nedim Şener before the 2nd criminal court in Bakırköy ended with acquittal. He was accused of breaching the confidentiality obligation of an ongoing investigation in an article in Milliyet dated February 9, 2009 entitled "Interesting Police Scheme". In the schemes, a link had been made between defendants in the Ergenekon trial and the murder of Hrant Dink . The court took the view that the legal elements of the crime were not met.

Arrested in March 2011 and released in March 2012

On March 3, 2011, eleven people in Istanbul and Ankara were arrested by judges allegedly close to Gülen for preparations for a coup, including journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener. Şık had researched the infiltration of the police by the Islamist Gülen movement for his book “ The Imam's Army ” . Nine of the eleven detainees, including Şık and Şener, came to be Ergenekon in on charges, a member of the secret society 6 March 2011 detention .

At the end of August, the first reports of an indictment appeared in the Turkish press. The 134-page indictment names 14 suspects, 12 of them in custody. The focus is on the OdaTV Internet portal. The defendants are accused of having founded, directed or belonged to the armed terrorist organization "Ergenekon", helped the organization incite hatred and hostility to the people, obtained documents about the security of the state or secret documents, the right to Violating privacy, storing personal information, and attempting to influence fair trials.

According to the indictment, Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener are accused of helping the Ergenekon secret society and the Ergenekon terrorist organization, respectively. The sentence was 7.5 to 15 years imprisonment. Nedim Şener was accused of conveying the instructions of the Ergenekon organization to Ahmet Şık.

Nedim Şener and Ahmet Şık were released from custody by the Istanbul Criminal Court on March 13, 2012. Şener told journalists shortly after his release that he would repeat the same request that he made when he was arrested when he was released. And this loud “Justice for Hrant Dink ”. Until this is guaranteed, one can neither speak of freedom nor of security in this country.
