Nehale lyaMpingana

Nehale lyaMpingana (* in Olukonda ; † April 28, 1908 ibid, German South West Africa , today Namibia ) was Ondonga King in Ovamboland in German South West Africa , now Namibia , from 1884 until his death in 1908 .

Nehale lyaMpingana was the son of the Ondonga king, Iitana yaNekwiyu, who was considered to be weak in leadership . Even as a prince, Nehale was considered very ambitious. After the death of his father in 1884, he took over government after a struggle for succession within the family. However, he had to share his rule with his older brother Kambonde lyaMpingana and only ruled over the eastern tribes of Ondonga. On April 21, 1885, William Worthington Jordan , leader of the Dorsland trekkers , bought around 50,000 km² of land between Otavi and Grootfontein in order to establish the Republic of Upingtonia . However, this plan was foiled by lyaMpingana, who had Worthington-Jordan killed on June 30, 1886 in order to preserve the borders of a kingdom.

Like the other kings of Ovambo, lyaMpingana maintained its rule against the administration of what was then German South West Africa through a consequently practiced isolationism . Nehale lyaMpingana died on April 28, 1908 as a result of a hunting accident in which he fell from his horse. He is said to have suffered from a lame leg for the last 15 years of his life. After his death, Ondonga was reunited under King Kambonde kaNgula (1909–1912).
